iSchool a New Zealand first

The University of Waikato’s Faculty of Computing & Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce that it is now a member of iSchools, making it the first iSchool in New Zealand. 

The iSchools organisation is an international collective of leading institutions dedicated to advancing the information field and who share an interest in the relationships between information, people, and technology. The University of Waikato joins a number of prestigious member institutions from around the world, including the University of Oxford, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Illinois, Wuhan University, and the University of Melbourne. 

Professor David Bainbridge, Department of Computer Science, says: “Joining the iSchools organisation is a very exciting step to be taking."  

"There's a very different feel to the nature of the research work we undertake in Computer Science at Waikato, when compared to other departments in the country. More than our track-history of releasing open source software that embodies our research, many of our projects do not fit the traditional confines of our subject.  I would characterise what we do as outward, not inward facing - looking beyond the traditional boundaries of our subject."
