The University of Waikato has agreed that it will recognise the right of students to attend the School Strike 4 Climate NZ events on Friday 27th September in Hamilton and Tauranga.
The decision was made following consultation with the Waikato Students’ Union and follows the move by the NZ Union of Students’ Associations on 29 August to call on all universities to support the event happening at many locations across the country.
All classes at both campuses will continue as currently scheduled. Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley has requested that staff teaching classes on 27 September take all reasonable measures to avoid any disadvantage for students who do not attend class on that day.
Professor Quigley says, “Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time. The University of Waikato supports urgent action to address the causes of climate change and is committed to creating and disseminating knowledge that will contribute to a sustainable future.”
