The partnership means the University of Waikato will be the first New Zealand university fully delivering an undergraduate programme in Vietnam, in the form of a new Bachelor of Business with majors in Supply Chain Management and Digital Business, from September this year.
Representatives at National Economics University, Vietnam, watch the online signing ceremony to mark two new joint programmes on offer with the University of Waikato.
The programme will be jointly taught by staff from Waikato (based in Vietnam and online) and from the School of Trade and International Economics at NEU, with opportunities for students to study in New Zealand for part of their degree once border restrictions ease.
The collaboration provides opportunities for Vietnamese students to receive a globally recognised qualification while also contributing to the increased demand in Vietnam’s supply chain and digital business industries.
Both organisations participated in an online signing ceremony with representatives including the New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, the current and former Vietnamese Ambassadors to New Zealand, Education New Zealand and other officials, alongside University of Waikato representatives. The ceremony expands on an overarching Memorandum of Agreement that was signed in January 2020.

University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Quigley, who has been engaged with education in Vietnam for more than 20 years, says the University is honoured to have an association with NEU and the new joint programme is an exciting next chapter of this relationship.
“We know that Vietnamese students are very hardworking and creative. They will receive New Zealand-certified degrees in a uniquely New Zealand learning environment while also being able to stay close to home, family and career opportunities.”
New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, Tredene Dobson, says: “The pandemic has presented challenges for students travelling to New Zealand. There has, however, been somewhat of a silver lining though as education providers have become more creative. This cooperation between Waikato and NEU is proof of their commitment to the Vietnam market.”
NEU President, Professor Pham Hong Chuong, says: “The collaboration reflects the trust between the two institutions and as the first New Zealand university to receive this approval, represents another historic milestone for Waikato’s longstanding work in Vietnam.”
