My Experience

Katrina is an experienced Reading Recovery Tutor who has been based in Hamilton since 2014. She works as part of a team of seven Tutors and is currently the Coordinator for the Tutor group, which also involves some liaison with National Reading Recovery and the team Manager. Each year she has trained a group of Reading Recovery teachers in the Hamilton/Waikato region and has worked with various trained teacher groups including a group of trained teachers in Taupo in 2016. Currently her role also involves working with trained Reading Recovery teachers at the Paeroa Sub-Centre/area. These roles require Katrina to build and maintain positive relationships, communicate effectively, and to work collaboratively with teachers and school management. She uses her Reading Recovery expertise and her 5 years Reading Recovery teaching experience to mentor and encourage teachers to support at risk literacy learners. Key aspects of this role involve the use of systematic observation of children and using assessment data to make decisions to support accelerated literacy learning. She is passionate about maximizing learning and achievement for both children and adults/teachers as well as meeting the individual needs of diverse groups of learners. The use of clear pedagogy and rationales are evident in all aspects of her work.

As an educator, Katrina has had the opportunity to work in a diverse range of schools including low and high decile schools, working regularly with English Language Learners including Japanese, Chinese and Indian children as well as Maori and Pasifika leaners. In addition, her 18 years of classroom teaching experience and the various leadership roles she has undertaken such as Junior Syndicate Leader, Associate Teacher and Lead Teacher for the Arts and Numeracy project have all contributed to her professional knowledge and understanding.
