Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network is pleased to announce the availability of three Rural Student Research Scholarships for the 2023/24 year.
Two of the Scholarships are open to any health students, to support a 12-week elective/studentship, and/or research placement within a rural community of the student’s choice.
A BNZ Rural Development scholarship is available to any year two and above Medical Student for the same period.
A $5,000 Scholarship will be paid to the successful recipients (students) and is intended to be used to help cover living expenses, as well as provide some spending money during the 12 weeks elective/research placement.

By nomination: The Nominator is to be the Chief/Main Supervisor and must be a current NZARE member. The nominee must be a current NZARE member. Thesis nominated must have been undertaken in New Zealand within a New Zealand tertiary institution and be focused on a New Zealand educational context or contexts.
The New Zealand Association for Research in Education offers three Awards:
- Lyn Foote Award for Student Research in Early Childhood Education – who has completed a high-quality masters or doctoral thesis.
- McKenzie Award – NZARE member’s significant contribution to educational research and to NZARE over an extended period of time.
- Rae Munro Award – recognises a master’s thesis in an area that has implications for New Zealand teacher education or classroom practice.
- Ranginui Walker Te Reo Māori Doctoral Award – awarded for a doctoral thesis in the Māori language.
- Sutton-Smith Doctoral Award – recognises a doctoral thesis in the field of education research.
- Te Tohu Pae Tawhiti Award – recognises researchers who have made a significant contribution to Maori education by conducting research over an extended period of time.

The objectives of the Rutherford Foundation Fellowships and Scholarships are to support the education and development of promising excellent early career researchers with the potential to excel in a research environment.

Women of any age and nationality, pursuing a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree program at an accredited university/college/institute, who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Students must be enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a master’s program at the time the application is submitted.
Applications are made through a Zonta Club. A club can be located using the locator tool on the STEM scholarship website (i.e., link above). There is a three stage review of the applications. Applications received by the club are reviewed and the best applicant is put forward to the national level (New Zealand represents District 16 of the international Districts/regions of Zonta International). From the national level one applicant is put forward to international level and then these assessed for awarding of the international prize of US$5000.

The purpose of this scholarship is to engage and support students in research in the area of arthritis under the supervision of an experienced research professional working in academia, health service provision or other types of institutional organisations. Arthritis NZ uses its research funding programme to achieve four key objectives, including to contribute to the body of research that seeks to determine the cause of arthritis, prevention of arthritis, improvement of early diagnosis, and treatment of all forms of arthritis. The Summer Scholarships are granted for small research projects with the intention of enabling students to develop valuable research skills. Projects are to be undertaken over the course of a 10–12-week period.

Maori undergraduate and postgraduate students who will be attending a recognised tertiary institution in 2017 are encouraged to apply for the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships.
Undergraduate – three scholarships worth $30,000 : $10,000 each per year of full-time study, for up to three years.
One Master scholarship valued up to $20,000: $10,000 per year of full-time study, for up to two years
One Master of Education research scholarship valued up to $20,000: $10,000 per year of full-time study, for up to two years.
One Doctoral scholarship valued up to $40,000: $20,000 per year of full-time study, for up to two years.

The Scholarships aim is to assist full-time students who whakapapa to Te Arawa, to complete a recognized tertiary qualification that will enrich their own life experience, community and ultimately, Aotearoa as a whole. The Fund provides two Undergraduate and two Postgraduate Scholarships for the advancement of education for Te Arawa descendants enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary institute in a NZQA recognised course. It is envisaged that the recipients of these Scholarships will be committed to contributing to the development and prosperity of Te Arawa iwi, hapū and whānau

In collaboration with PSANZ, Methanex New Zealand is offering two Undergraduate Scholarships. Applicants must be a 2nd year undergraduate, studying a Bachelor in Engineering (BE) in the areas of Mechanical, Electrical, Process, Control Systems or Reliability) or an applicable degree with a specialisation in Health, Safety & Environment or Process Safety Management, who are about to begin their 3rd year of their degree at a New Zealand University.
The value of the award is $5,000 for one year only.

This scholarship was established by the Auckland Business Chamber in 2016, to mark Michael Barnett’s 25 years of leadership of the organisation. There are two scholarships available valued at $5,000 each. The Scholarships are open to promising communication or management students to complete their studies; or be a great communicator who could benefit from this scholarship in order to develop strong leadership skills; or have a research project, associated with leadership or communication that would benefit from this scholarship.

In accordance with Professor Bates’ love of interdisciplinary research a wide range of students in the physical sciences and engineering will be eligible for this scholarship. Preference will be given to those whose research aims to apply information/image processing to studies in medicine, the physical sciences, astronomy or engineering.

The Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science is awarded by the Kawharu Foundation and comprises a grant of $10,000. The purpose of the Scholarship is to support and encourage Māori students engaged in masters level study in the sciences. The Scholarship is applicable across a broad range of science disciplines including the physical, mathematical and computational, earth, environment, marine, social, health, biological, biomedical, human, and behavioural sciences.

Soroptimist International exists to inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women. This scholarship has been established to assist women intending to pursue an educational programme to enter or re-enter the workforce or change occupation. The Soroptimists, a women’s service organisation, offer this Scholarship to women enrolled in an NZQA approved programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution.
Applicants must be 25 years or over (on 1 September in the year of application), have a proven record of academic achievement, be NZ citizens, and be prepared to participate in Soroptimist promotional activities..

Scholarship to enable more Māori to thrive in health related mahi. A maximum of $10,000 may be awarded to any one individual per year, and the scholarship can be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs, or study-related costs. This scholarship is open to all Māori descendants who are currently living in Aotearoa New Zealand, and currently studying or about to embark on study.
