Selwyn Street Studios

Located conveniently in Selwyn Street, right across the road from Tauranga city campus, our new University-managed accommodation complex consists of 88 standard and 3 accessibility studio rooms. Each floor has shared social spaces that provide stunning views across the harbour. Communal areas are located on the basement level and an attractive outdoor area is a great place to relax and enjoy the great weather that Tauranga is famous for.

Enjoy the privacy of your own fully-furnished studio room plus en suite bathroom. Rooms include a bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, wardrobe, mini fridge and there's free Wi-Fi. Move in and make it your own. Students can bring their own bedding and towels or buy a linen pack to keep.

Each standard studio includes:

  • King single bed with mattress and mattress protector
  • Desk with chair, rubbish bin and noticeboard

Residents will need to bring their own linen or can purchase a linen pack for $160.

*Only students enrolled for 1 Trimester will be offered an 18 week contract (Study Abroad / exchange
students or anyone finishing off their studies. Everyone else will be offered a 37 or 50 week contract.

Additional costs

  Cost Details
Deposit $400 To secure your place in the Selwyn Street Studios accommodation, you will need to accept your offer online and pay the deposit and administration fee.
Administration fee $150 The administration fee is required with the application.
Activity fee $200 The activity fee funds a range of social, sporting and cultural activities for residents and needs to be paid before moving in.
Linen pack (optional) $160 A bed and mattress protector are provided in the studios. Students can either bring their own linen (standard studio king single, accessibility studio double) or purchase a linen pack. Includes a duvet inner, pillow, sheet set with a pillowcase, duvet cover set, a bath mat and two towels.

How to Apply

All accommodation applications are made online.  You do not need to have been accepted into your study programme to apply.

In most cases we will also require a reference.

Applications for 2024 open on 1 August 2023

NZ School Leaver

For the purpose of an accommodation application, a 'School Leaver' is someone who has left or is leaving a NZ school in 2022 or 2023 and will be starting their Tertiary Studies in 2024.

If this is you then in addition to the online application we require a Common Confidential Reference Form (CCRF) from your School. These are usually completed by a teacher, careers advisor or principal, and forwarded to us directly by the school.

NZ non School Leaver

A character Reference is required for any other NZ student who left School prior to 2022. The reference should be filled in by someone such as an employer, tutor, community leader, minister, or sports coach.

International Students

International Students who attended a NZ School in 2022 or 2023 are also required to supply a CCRF (as above)

No reference is required for an International Student who did not attend a NZ school.

Offers and Selection

For 2024, we recommend that you apply early to ensure that you get a room for next year. If you apply and we have received your reference by 1 October 2023, you will be considered for a place when we make our first round of offers.

The information on your application along with your academic achievement to date and the comments and recommendations on your reference are used when assessing your application.

Scholarships

If you are a student at the University of Waikato Tauranga campus, there are a number of scholarships available that can go toward your accommodation costs.

The University of Waikato Tauranga Campus Residential Scholarship is one that is designed to assist school leavers and returning undergraduate University of Waikato students with an accommodation credit up to the value of $8,000.

Accepting Your Offer

If you are successful and offered a place, you will need to accept your offer and pay your deposit/admin fee online by the due date indicated on your offer letter. If you don’t, the offer expires and your place will be offered to another student. If you have concerns about meeting this deadline, contact the Accommodation Office - accom@waikato.ac.nz or +64 7 838 4084

When accepting your contract to reside in University-managed accommodation, you are agreeing to the rules and regulations and the fees and costs set out above.

You are required to pay five weeks rent in advance plus any optional extras before moving in. This payment is due January 2024.

Support

Our University-managed accommodation in Tauranga has one Residential Leader (RL) to every 23 residents to provide help and guidance. RLs are students too so they are likely to know the kinds of issues you might have and can help you figure them out.

Staff are rostered on duty every day, including evenings and weekends, so there is always someone around to help.
