Graduation ceremonies for December postponed

Due to the restrictions around holding gatherings at Alert Level 2 and the uncertainty of when these might ease, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our December graduation ceremonies in Hamilton and Tauranga.

Students can still graduate from the University of Waikato in one of two ways:

  1. April 2022 ceremonies: All graduands expecting to graduate this December will automatically be deferred to ceremonies scheduled for April 2022.
  2. In absentia: If students do not wish to wait until April 2022, they can choose to graduate in absentia, meaning their qualification will be awarded without them needing to be physically present.

FAQ

Why can’t graduation ceremonies continue under Alert Level 2?

Holding graduation at Alert Level 2 wouldn’t provide a good experience for students, or their whānau. The guidelines under Level 2 restrict the level of hospitality that we can provide and requires all attendees to physically distance themselves from those outside of their bubble. Implementing this would be very challenging in some of our venues and would also significantly impact the number of guests that each graduand can bring with them.

What if alert levels change (and we’re in the new framework) between now and December?

December graduation ceremonies are our biggest events of the year. They require a lot of time to plan and prepare, more so with Covid-19 restrictions. Based on the uncertainty of being able to hold large gatherings, without requirements for distancing and restricted hospitality, and the lead time required to prepare the ceremonies, it won’t be possible to hold graduation at short notice, even if restrictions allow us to.

Will you require vaccination certificates from graduands, friends and whānau at any future ceremonies?

Vaccination certificate requirements are likely to become common across venues when the new Covid-19 Protection Framework is introduced. As a responsible organisation, we expect that this will include our future graduation ceremonies as these events are attended by large numbers of the general public. We will communicate in more detail about this ahead of our scheduled April 2022 ceremonies.

Will I still be able to receive my degree/diploma/certificate if I live overseas?

Yes, we will send out all degrees, diplomas and certificates once we are able to do so.
