Explore New Zealand while you study
New Zealand is a small yet mighty country of 4.5 million people located in the South Pacific. A study and travel experience in New Zealand is transformative. You'll join a world-class education system, meet friendly locals, see amazing sights, and enjoy a healthy work-life balance. The University of Waikato is centrally located on the North Island in the city of Hamilton, just 1.5 hours south of Auckland. Our location makes it easy to explore New Zealand's stunning beaches, forests, and mountains... all in one day!

The University of Waikato challenges, inspires, and prepares students to lead change.
The University of Waikato is a consistent climber in the most prestigious international rankings. We've risen 135 places in the QS World University Rankings in six years, and the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings brought us up to the third equal in New Zealand.
Almost all papers (courses) are open to study abroad and exchange students, making it easy to get the credits you need.
Our papers are built with theoretical and practical components to enable you to get the best possible academic experience.
Our programmes are industry-relevant and some offer experiential learning opportunities such as internships and research, so you can put your learning into practice and build your networks. Our smaller class sizes provide plenty of opportunities for students to work closely with award-winning lecturers and students are supported by experienced tutors.
Join our diverse student community and feel at home in no time.
The Waikato international student experience starts with a week-long orientation to help you find your way around campus, meet other students, and get settled before classes begin. During orientation, you'll have the opportunity to join student clubs and the International Buddy Programme, learn more about volunteering in the Waikato community, and sign up for international student trips.
Our campus culture is relaxed and friendly. Experience market days by the lake, DJs and live music every Wednesday on the Village Green, and meet friends at one of our many on-campus cafes.
Hamilton boasts an array of award-winning restaurants, cafes, bars, and clubs. Sport is a big part of life in the Waikato region, which is home to New Zealand's Olympic rowing and cycling teams, and the Waikato Chiefs rugby team. A rugby game at the Waikato Stadium is an experience not to be missed!
One of the biggest perks of living in Hamilton is our proximity to many of NZ's top destinations. Popular day trips include Maori culture in Rotorua, the Lord of the Rings film location Hobbiton, golden sand beaches of Mount Maunganui, surfing the left-hand break in Raglan, skiing Mt Ruapehu, and exploring the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
At Waikato, on-campus housing is guaranteed for study abroad and exchange students.
We have many accommodation options to choose from, so there's something for everyone. Living on-campus provides the ultimate Kiwi student experience - it's a great way to meet new people and immerse yourself in student life. If you're looking to improve your English or want a home away from home, try a homestay and live with a local New Zealand family.
