This paper integrates an understanding of land and soil processes that occur at paddock to catchment to national scales with an emphasis on how land might be managed to decrease environmental impacts. This requires an understanding of the role of soil pedology and classification and management practices to optimise resource use for land-based production purposes, focusing on avoiding or minimising environmental effects. Topics include soil classification, soil degradation, soil fertility, nitrogen, phosphorus cycling, soil related greenhouse gas emissions, soil quality assessment within which land use practices take place.
