Selected issues involved with land use and its intensification, including nitrogen budgeting and soil quality, are examined. Farm-scale soil and land-use capability (LUC) mapping are undertaken to illustrate their role in guiding management decisions to help reduce or mitigate environmental risks associated with particular land uses in the Waikato region.
