A large part of leadership is relational. Leaders need to create higher leader-direct report exchange relationships, as well as encourage leadership to be shared/distributed within teams. Relational leadership is also required in a context where heirarchical authority cannot be exercised. Higher relational leadership has been found to create greater employee engagement and commitment.
