The Master of Management Studies (MMS) degree will bring you closer to the frontiers of knowledge in your specialist field, and prepare you for leadership roles that require a high level of critical thinking and information analysis.

This degree normally includes both taught and research papers, but can also be taken as a full research degree.

Study part-time or full-time for 1-2 years (120 or 180 points), starting in either February (A Semester) or July (B Semester). Normally all papers are taken within a single specialist subject or interdisciplinary area.

You can apply for the MMS if you have:

  • Completed a bachelor's degree from Waikato Management School, or its equivalent, OR;
  • Completed an honours degree or postgraduate diploma in a relevant subject area (at least 120 points), AND;
  • Achieved at least a B grade average in the subject you intend to take for this qualification.
International students

International students must have an equivalent qualification from a recognised university, and meet the English language requirements for graduate/postgraduate programmes.

English language requirements:

  • an IELTS overall score of at least 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or
  • an iBT (Internet-based TOEFL) score of at least 90, with a Writing score of at least 22, or
  • a B grade or better at Level 8 in the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English, or
  • an overall score of C (with at least a C in the Writing band) in the Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes, or
  • a PTE Academic overall score of at least 65, with no less than 58 for each communicative skill.

The Master of Management Studies (MMS) in Finance – Professional is a specialist one-year taught master’s degree (180 points), which is aimed at those seeking to build a professional career in the financial industry.

The course has a strong practical focus and is ideal for students who have never majored in finance before.

The 11 required papers will develop your foundational knowledge of investments and financial markets, before introducing you to more advanced topics that can be applied in the real world, such as derivative securities and advanced financial modelling.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake an applied research project investigating a financial issue.

Please note: This programme is currently not available for new enrolments in 2018. However, a revised version will be offered in 2020.

Entry requirements:

You will be eligible to apply for the MMS (Finance - Professional) if you have:

Completed a Waikato Management School bachelor's degree, or equivalent, or
Achieved at least a B-minus grade average in a relevant commerce, management or business degree.

Required papers:
The course is divided into three stages:

  • Stage 1 - Core knowledge and skills
  • Stage 2 - Advanced professional knowledge
  • Stage 3 - Applied research and professional internship

You will take each of the following 11 papers:

Stage 1 (60 points):

  • FINA501 Computer Modelling for Financial Analysis (15 pts)
  • FINA510 Financial Theory and Corporate Policy (15 pts)
  • FINA517 Investment, Portfolios and Financial Markets (15 pts)
  • ECON507 Quantitative Skills for Finance and Economics (15 pts)

Stage 2 (75 points):

  • FINA502 Derivative Securities One (15 pts)
  • FINA503 Issues in Corporate Finance (15 pts)
  • FINA504 International Corporate Finance (15 pts)
  • FINA507 Corporate Restructuring and Governance (15 pts)
  • FINA519 Derivative Securities Two (15 pts)

Stage 3 (45 points):

  • FINA505 Applied Research Project in Finance (30 pts)
  • FINA515 Advanced Financial Modelling 1 (15pts)
