MPhil - Mathematics as a subject

The Master of Philosophy is a one-year research-based degree in which candidates undertake a programme of supervised research which critically investigates a topic of substance and significance.

Mathematics is a subject of vital importance that underpins many activities of our modern world. Employers recognise University of Waikato Mathematics graduates for their analytical and problem solving skills as well as their high level of numeracy, which are critical skills for a broad range of jobs.

Prescriptions for the MPhil

The Master of Philosophy is an 18 month research-based degree in which students undertake a programme of approved and supervised research that leads to a thesis which critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, displays intellectual independence and makes a substantial original contribution to the subject area concerned, and is of publishable quality.

For students who have completed at least one year in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (subject areas may include Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics or Design) in the year of tenure and have applied for a University of Waikato exchange programme. A Zulauf Trust Scholarship  Accepting applications

This Scholarship is open to domestic and international students who are currently enrolled full-time at the University of Waikato in postgraduate study with a research component in mathematics or statistics. Applicants must have achieved at least a B+ average for their most recent undergraduate degree, and be able to show dedication to mathematics and to furthering the study of mathematics.
