PGCert - Management and Sustainability as a subject

Management and Sustainability is available as a graduate and postgraduate subject only.

Postgraduate certificates and diplomas provide the opportunity for continuing professional development in the same area as an original degree. A postgraduate diploma can often lead to a master's degree.

Degree Planner

Prescriptions for the PGCert(MgtStn), PGDip(MgtStn) and MMS

The qualification regulations define the subject requirements for the PGCert(MgtStn), PGDip(MgtStn) and MMS.

PGCert(MgtStn) students must include 60 points from ACCTN541, MAORI502, ECONS515, LCOMM584, POLSC537, STMGT580 and THMGT502.

PGDip(MgtStn) students must include 60 points from ECONS515, LCOMM584 and STMGT580, and 30 points from ACCTN541, MAORI502, MGSUS591, POLSC537, and THMGT502.

MMS students must complete MNMGT581, one of MGSUS591, MGSUS592, MGSUS593 or MGSUS594; and include 60 points from ECONS515, LCOMM584, and STMGT580. Students taking the 120 point MMS are required to complete at least 60 points from the papers listed for the subject. Students taking the 180 point MMS are required to complete at least 120 points from the papers listed for the subject.

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Management and Sustainability

To complete the requirements for a Postgraduate Certificate, you must pass 60 points at 500-level from the  subject area of Management and Sustainability. See the Calendar for full details.

The specific requirements for the PGCert in Management and Sustainability are that you must choose two papers (60 points) from the following list. Not all papers may be offered every year.

  • DEVST502 Sustainable Resource Issues (30pts)
  • ECONS515 Economics and the Environment
  • LCOMM584 Sustainable Futures (30pts)
  • POLSC537 Environmental Politics and Public Policy (30pts)
  • STMGT580 Strategies for Sustainability (30pts)
  • THMGT502 Tourism Development and the Environment (30pts)

Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Management and Sustainability

To complete the requirements for a Postgraduate Diploma, you must pass 120 points at 500-level, including at least 90 points from the subject area of Management and Sustainability. See the Calendar for full details.

The specific requirements for the PGDip in Management and Sustainability are that you must include two papers (60 points) from List A, one paper from List A (30 points), and one elective paper (30 points) at 500-level.

Not all papers may be offered every year.

Master of Management Studies (MMS) in Management and Sustainability

The completion requirements for the MMS depend on your admission criteria; it can be either 120 points (4 papers) with an honours degree or postgraduate diploma, or 180 points (6 papers) with a bachelor's degree.

However all students must:

  • Take MNMGT581 Research Methods in Management Studies (unless passed previously)
  • Complete a Dissertation or Directed study (at least 30 points) or a Thesis ( at least 90 points) in their field of study

You must take at least 60 points (2 papers) from the following list:

  • ECONS515 Economics and the Environment
  • LCOMM584 Sustainable Futures (30pts)
  • STMGT580 Strategies for Sustainability (30pts)

You may take up to 60 points (2 papers) in subjects outside your field of study (at convenor's discretion).
