Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Subject regulations
By studying Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) you will explore the principles and practices of second and additional language teaching. The programme offered at The University of Waikato is designed for both new and experienced teachers.
You will develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach English to speakers of other languages, with the option to choose from a number of electives, designed to acknowledge potential career pathways that are open to you as a graduate.
You can choose papers in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, education theory, education leadership, assessment, as well as papers such as English for Academic Purposes (EAP), curriculum, Pacific Pedagogies, English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). You can also choose to take a TESOL teaching practice paper.
Students will also engage with and undertake TESOL-related research, completing both research methods and research report papers.

                                PGCert(TESOL) and PGDip(TESOL) The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is available on-campus in Hamilton. The programme comprises 60 points, consisting of APPLN564 and APPLN566 as required papers. The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is available on-campus in Hamilton and may be taken full-time or part-time. The programme comprises 120 points, including APPLN564 and APPLN566 as required papers. For further details, contact the Division of Education Office.

                                MTESOL The qualification regulations define the requirements for the Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Candidates admitted into the 180 point MTESOL under section 2(a) or 2(b), must complete 180 points at 500 level, including: APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566, and either ALPSS592 (60 points) or APPLN585 and one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, or APPLN565. Candidates admitted into the 120 point MTESOL under section 2(c), must complete 120 points at 500 level, including: APPLN501, APPLN564, APPLN566 and APPLN585. Candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or a Postgraduate Diploma in a cognate discipline may substitute APPLN564 and APPLN566 for one of APPLN505, APPLN530, APPLN562, APPLN563, APPLN565, or APPLN592 and any remaining points from any elective paper.
