- Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies from Waikato Pathways College
In Daniel Sio’s family, studying abroad in New Zealand is starting to become a bit of a tradition. The Malaysian student is the fourth in his family to study in New Zealand, and he’s just finished his foundation certificate at Waikato Pathways College.
When Daniel decided to study overseas, the destination was an easy choice. He had grown up listening to his parents and cousin tell stories about New Zealand, and he fell in love with the country during a family holiday in 2009.
He chose the University of Waikato for its affordable living costs, peaceful environment and high quality law programme. To bridge the gap between high school and university, Daniel enrolled in the six-month Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies.
“I’m really glad I decided to take the foundation course. I learnt so much about academic writing and referencing. It was also great to make friends in the course, because I still keep in touch with them all now that I’m studying for my degree.”
Daniel is now in his first year of a Bachelor of Laws, aiming to make a career in business law one day. “My cousin studied law at the University of Waikato, and she encouraged me to come here,” he says. “The law programme is very globalised and practical, so I feel like I’m getting a very good education.”
Living in Bryant Hall, Daniel has immersed himself in Kiwi culture, and enjoys exploring the country when he isn’t studying. “I really love this country. I’ve visited many places in the North Island and I’m looking forward to visiting the South Island when my parents come to visit.”
Daniel says he recommends the six-month foundation course to international students who want a taster of uni life.
“Pathways really takes your English to another level and it’s the perfect start to your time at the University of Waikato.”
