What’s the best thing about volunteering?

I love meeting new people. Most of my voluntary work has involved dealing with people with diverse backgrounds – social, educational, age and cultural. I find it interesting to get different insights when talking to them. Volunteering also keeps me productive and positive.

Tell us about a volunteering highlight!

I was a Christmas gift wrapper for Volunteering Waikato at Centre Place last December. My job was to wrap gifts as neatly and quickly as possible, advertise Volunteering Waikato and raise funds. I really enjoy wrapping gifts and I met awesome people there.

Which organisation are you currently volunteering for?

I've joined non-profit Girls2Girls Connection as a mentor for refugee teenage girls in Hamilton. As a mentor, I attend leadership training, and run themed workshops, holiday programmes and one-to-one appointments for the girls. I chose to join this organisation because its focus aligns with my vision. It has become a great medium to help the girls to improve their confidence, and social and communication skills.

What tips do you have for anyone getting started with volunteering?

Just do it. Once you see volunteering opportunity out there, check your schedule. If you are free, sign you up and mark it on your calendar straight away. Be brave and confident to be involved, even if an activity is completely new to you. Believe me, it will always be fun.

What skills have you gained from volunteering?

Communication, teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills!
