"The lifestyle that comes along with the Defence Force is like no other,” says Waikato graduate Emily Hall.
Emily enlisted with the Royal New Zealand Air Force right after finishing her management degree at the end of 2013, and was sent down to Blenheim for six months of training.
She is based at Ohakea Air Force Base, where she works as a logistics officer and oversees a team of people of all different ages and experiences.
During a typical field exercise, Emily’s role involves planning and setting up the tented camp; planning logistical movements; ensuring everything is available for a self-sufficient camp; forecasting requirements; liaising with all the different units on exercise; and working alongside the New Zealand Army.
Emily changes post every 18 to 24 months, exposing her to many different fields within the RNZAF.
“The extended family that I’ve become a part of, along with the incredible opportunities to improve myself, both personally and professionally, make me feel extremely lucky in my job,” says Emily.
“That was the road I knew I wanted to go down, and Waikato offered the papers and skills I was interested in,” she says.
While studying, Emily completed a management internship with GEA Avapac Engineering in Hamilton, where she processed orders, shipping and made purchases for the business. “After that, I knew I had the capability to succeed in the workplace.”
