What began as time spent between university classes checking prices and calling brokers to place trades has developed into a full-time career in the investment industry for Sam Gibb.
After starting his career as a tax consultant with global accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Sam joined Milford Asset Management in 2009 as an investment analyst to learn more about the New Zealand market.
From there, Sam knew he wanted to manage a fund in larger, more liquid markets, so he made the move to Singapore in 2011. He spent some time there as head of the valuation team at an Indonesian private equity firm.
Now living in Singapore, Sam is an analyst for the Pan-Asia macro fund at Symphony Partners.
"My role requires me to understand the economic situations in each of the countries in Southeast Asia, and to identify investment opportunities. Any time I'm travelling for leisure, I'm always looking at what's happening in the various countries to try and determine which countries and companies will give the best investment bang for buck."
Sam graduated from Waikato in 2009 with a Bachelor of Management Studies, majoring in accounting and finance, as well as a Bachelor of Laws with first class honours.
In the little spare time he has, Sam spends it snowboarding - he's a past president of the Waikato Univesity Snowboarding Club.
In 2013, he competed in one of the world's toughest marathons, the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, where competitors run through extreme alpine conditions, starting at Everest base camp, 5364m above sea level.
