- Certificate of Attainment in Academic English from Waikato Pathways College
Ever since she was a child, Chinese student Wendy Ruan had dreamed of travelling to New Zealand. Last year, this dream finally came true, as she moved to the University of Waikato to study a Bachelor of Design.
“The College was a great way for me to develop my academic writing, listening and study skills. My English also improved a lot, thanks to the Pathways drop-in sessions, conversation practice opportunities, and the amazing resource library. The teachers are incredibly supportive and the classes are small, which gave me the best possible start to my university career.”
Moving to the University of Waikato wasn’t a decision Wendy made lightly. She visited several New Zealand universities, but immediately fell in love with Waikato’s campus and strong Pathways’ programmes.
“I love the atmosphere in Hamilton, and the University of Waikato campus is beautiful – it’s great that the University is all on one campus, with nice trees, lakes and buildings. Hamilton is clearly a growing city, so it’s a good place to be.”
Now in her first year of a Bachelor of Design, majoring in communication design, Wendy is loving her studies and can’t wait to use her degree in the design industry. She has quickly grown used to New Zealand’s quiet lifestyle, a stark contrast to the busy streets of China. Having already travelled around the North Island, Wendy is looking forward to exploring the South Island as she completes her degree.
“New Zealand is stunning and I really like the relaxed atmosphere. People here are so friendly, and I have enjoyed being around the Māori culture. I would definitely recommend the Pathways course to anyone wanting an introduction to university – it taught me so much.”
