Regulations for the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting (PGDipPA)

The PGDipPA is subject to external approval. The first proposed intake of this programme is 1 January 2025.

  1. The Personal Programmes of Study Regulations apply in these regulations.

Admission

  1. Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting would normally have qualified for the award of a Master of Professional Accounting of the University of Waikato, or a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent.
  2. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division or delegated authority may admit candidates who have substantially completed the requirements of a Master of Professional Accounting.
  3. In exceptional circumstances, candidates who can demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or scholarly experience deemed to be equivalent to the requirements of section 3 may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe.
  4. Applicants who have completed a Master of Professional Accounting with an endorsement in Chartered Accountancy will not be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting.

Requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma

  1. The normal minimum period of enrolment for completion of the Postgraduate Diploma is one year.
  2. Candidates must enrol in the Division of Management and follow an approved programme of study.
  3. Candidates must gain 120 points at 500 level, as prescribed in the relevant entry in the Waikato Catalogue of papers. Candidates must complete the CA Program consisting of 60 points papers: ACCTP512, ACCTP513, ACCTP514, ACCTP515, ACCTP516, ACCTP517, ACCTP518, ACCTP519, and 60 points from ACCTN502, ACCTN506, ACCTN531 or ACCTN541.
  4. If admitted under clause 3 of these regulations, candidates must complete their Master of Professional Accounting, or equivalent, in order to be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting.
  5. If a candidate fails a paper or papers (worth not more than 30 points in total), they may repeat the paper or papers or take an alternative paper or papers with the same total points value on one occasion only. A candidate who fails a paper or papers worth more than 30 points in total will not be permitted to proceed with the Diploma.

Award of Honours

  1. The Postgraduate Diploma may be awarded with Distinction.

Variations

  1. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Division or delegated authority may vary or waive these regulations in individual cases.
