Music auditions

Learn about the audition requirements for the Bachelor of Music Performance programme.

All applicants are required to provide a file of their audition.

Submission of recordings

  • Recording files should be in a regular format with worldwide access.
  • The file must be of good audio and visual quality – your speaking and performance must be clearly audible.
  • Camera work should be straightforward. Have the camera on a tripod so that you and your hands/fingers are clearly visible while playing.
  • Do not do any camera zooms etc, just select a good camera angle and leave it recording for the duration of the performance.


  1. One work from the Baroque period (e.g. Bach, Handel, Scarlatti) +
  2. One movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) +
  3. A work of your choice  

At least one of the above must be played from memory

String and Wind

Two contrasting pieces and an unaccompanied study (15 minutes of music)

Harpsichord and organ

Two contrasting pieces, one by J.S. Bach and one by another composer


Two contrasting pieces, one a classical art song or aria, or 2 choices from contrasting Musicals

All applicants  

A short sight-reading exercise and a short aural test (intervals, chords, cadences, melodic memory, etc.)

Please provide a Word document that includes a link to a video performance on a platform of your choice (e.g. Google drive, YouTube, etc.)

BMus(Hons) and MMus Performance Entry Information

Applicants must present three contrasting pieces (or movements) from at least two different musical periods.

The online file must be recorded within the last  year. It may be a recording of your qualifying degree final recital if  appropriate.

Applicants should perform by memory when appropriate. (Note  that additional repertoire to be sent by a further online file may be requested by the admission panel).

Applications can be made at any time through the Enrolment Office.

MMus - Opera

  • Applications for the MMus in Opera close on the 15th of September.
  • Auditions are on the 14th and 15th of October.
  • Entry to the programme is by audition only.

A BMus or academic equivalent is required along with a proven ability as a singer of promise with evidence provided at the time of application consisting of:

  • Links to 2 or more video recordings of performances.
  • Up to two references from a teacher or opera practitioner.

Audition requirements

Applicants will be required to present three contrasting opera arias from memory to a select audition panel. The panel may also engage in a discussion with the applicant during the audition.
