Writing Studies
The School of Arts offers a writing-intensive learning experience that will enable you to grow as a writer no matter where your interest lies. It will give you the skills needed to write convincingly about the past, or create a vivid sense of the contemporary world.
Writing Studies graduates seek employment opportunities working for newspapers and magazines, central and local government, schools, the media, theatres and publishing houses. Writing Studies also lends itself to a freelance career.

Supporting Writers: The Sargeson 'Short Story' Prize
Named after celebrated New Zealand writer Frank Sargeson, the Sargeson Prize is New Zealand's richest short story prize. Find out how the prize can support you in your writing goals and ambitions.
This prize is awarded in two divisions, one for Secondary Schools and the other open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents aged 16 and over.
A Space for Writers: Writer in Residence
Each year the University of Waikato invites applications for the position of Writer in Residence, tenable for twelve months. Jointly funded by the University of Waikato and Creative New Zealand, the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa the position is open to poets, novelists, short story writers, dramatists, and writers of serious non-fiction.
