Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato The University of Waikato and Te Kura Toi Tangata The Faculty of Education has always had a strong affinity with Māori. Many of our graduates are now influential leaders in Māori education working in wānanga, universities, schools and government departments.
Te Kura Toi Tangata has several programmes in Māori medium teaching that prepare graduates for bilingual, total immersion and mainstream environments. For people interested in studying early childhood teaching there is the BTchg Ki Taiao programme. For those people interested in studying primary school teaching there is the BTchg Kākano Rua programme.
These programmes are taught in a whānau-based environment. Students will complete the majority of their papers with the same whānau group. Māori mentors are also available to provide pastoral and academic support. All Waikato teacher education programmes consist of compulsory Professional Education and Curriculum papers and practicum. (See our qualifications or subject pages for further details).
If you are a qualified teacher interested in postgraduate study there is Te Rōpū Tohu Paerua which is a PGDipEd (Māori Medium Teaching) qualification. These papers can also be taken as part of a Master of Education.
