About Russell

Although I am now retired from a continuing position I currently hold the position of Acting Dean in the Faculty of Education. My academic life began as a primary school teacher and principal and, for more than 20 years, I worked in rural and urban schools. From 1989 to 1991 I worked as an adviser to rural schools in the Department of Education. I was appointed to  the University of Waikato in 1991 and served in the Faculty of Education from that time until March 2015. My particular interests are in school leadership, school and teacher development, professionalism and teacher ethics, rural education and online learning.

Research Interests

My interest in online learning was part of the Primary Mixed Media Teacher Education Programme. I was the Coordinator of the Mixed Media Programme from 1997 - 2005. This programme has enabled students to become teachers even though they are unable to attend regular campus classes. This programme has been operating since 1997 and more than 1000 students have now graduated from the programme.
