About Judith
Profile
I am a fully registered teacher. I taught for many years at all levels of the primary school, with a particular interest in teaching at the upper primary school level (years five to eight). I have always had an interest in pre-service education, as well as in-service classroom practice, and the inter-relationship between the two sectors. I am employed as a full time lecturer in mathematics education, at both the under-graduate and post-graduate levels.
In 2014 I was fortunate to win the Faculty of Education Tertiary (University of Waikato) Teaching Excellence Award. This award acknowledges teaching as being of high quality, as recognised by one's peers and the students.
Research Interests
I have always had an interest in issues associated with effective curriculum implementation in the primary school classroom. My Masters degree was based around the impact of a National Curriculum on teaching and learning - with particular reference to curriculum leadership. I am particularly interested in the teaching of mathematics for understanding and much of my research focuses on the use of the term numeracy in mathematics education. This incorporates the importance of understanding number as a basis for teaching and learning across all strands. My PhD research focused on the professional knowledge of New Zealand primary school teachers, when teaching mathematics for numeracy in the multiplicative and proportional domains.
Key interests:
- Professional Knowledge of Teachers
- Teaching of Numeracy
- Teaching of Number - Multiplication & Division, and Fractions
