I am a senior lecturer in the School of Education and General Editor of the Teachers and Curriculum journal.
I am interested in the work of educators and learners, and the processes of judgement of that work or study whether classroom assessment or appraisal, formal or informal. My PhD study was based on an interest in how school principals are judged in their work. It was titled Judging what they do: formal, informal and self appraisal of New Zealand (rural) primary school principals (2017). My research also looks at innovative practices and changes to educators’ work including the use of digital technologies and assessment systems. To date I have supervised directed studies and masters theses on personalised learning, online learning, teachers’ beliefs about ICT, and teacher appraisal. I am on supervision panels for doctoral students looking at flipped learning, technology education and use of digital technologies in classroom pedagogy.
I teach undergraduate compulsory papers in professional practice, curriculum and assessment, and optional papers on eEducation and curriculum integration. I teach papers on Research Methods and Digital technologies/eEducation at graduate level. I have also worked in eEducation research and development.
I was the recipient of the Teacher Education Forum of Aotearoa New Zealand Emerging Educator Award for 2008. This award acknowledges contribution to teacher education. Prior to coming to the University of Waikato, I qualified as a primary teacher in Christchurch and taught for 15 years mostly in New Zealand primary contexts.
