Dr Kerry Earl Rinehart
Education Research; Professional Studies in Education
Qualitative Inquiry, Postgraduate Education Research, Methodology
Qualifications: BEd Cant, MEd Waik, PhD, Waik
I am a senior lecturer in the School of Education and Co-Editor of the Waikato Journal of Education.
My PhD study was based on an interest in how school principals are judged in their work. It was titled Judging what they do: formal, informal and self appraisal of New Zealand (rural) primary school principals (2017). Through that study I became interested in theories and practices of qualitative inquiry, teaching about and through research, postgraduate student experiences and supervision.
I am interested in the work of educators and learners at multiple levels and diverse contexts, and the processes of judgement of that work or study whether classroom assessment or formal or informal appraisal. My research also looks at innovative practices and changes to educators’ work.
I teach undergraduate compulsory papers in professional practice, assessment, and optional papers on eEducation and curriculum integration. I teach papers on research methods and about the use of digital technologies/eEducation at graduate level.
I am a member of NZARE and a past elected member of Council and national secretary.
I was the recipient of the Teacher Education Forum of Aotearoa New Zealand Emerging Educator Award for 2008. This award acknowledges contribution to teacher education.
Prior to coming to the University of Waikato, I qualified as a primary teacher in Christchurch and taught for 15 years mostly in New Zealand primary contexts.
