I am an Associate Professor in Te Kura Toi Tangata, Division of Education where I teach children's literature at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The main focus of my research is in the language used in New Zealand children's picturebooks. My research has examined the use of Māori loanwords in New Zealand English picturebooks, and more recently I have been analysing the linguistic landscape of dual language picturebooks. I have also explored the link between national identity and children's picturebooks, work which has resulted in the development of two picturebook collections: The New Zealand PictureBook Collection (picturebooks.co.nz) and the New Zealand Pacific PictureBook Collection (pacificpicturebooks.co.nz).
My work has been published nationally in the New Zealand English Journal, Te Reo, Waikato Journal of Education, Set, Early Childhood Folio and Reading Forum; and internationally in the Australian Journal of Teacher Education, BookBird, Children's Literature in Education, and New Review of Children's Literature and Librarianship. I have co-edited two books Children's Literature in Multilingual Classrooms (Trentham, 2014) with Professor Christine Helot and Dr. Raymonde Sneddon, and in 2018 Understanding ourselves and others in a multiliterate world (Trentham, 2018) with Dr. Libby Limbrick and Dr. Pam Dix. In 2014, 2015 and 2016 I have worked with a group of New Zealand teachers in India supporting untrained teachers with an organisation called Rata (rata.org.nz).
In 2019/2020 I was a Fulbright New Zealand Scholar based at the University of Arizona where I worked with Professor Kathy Short at the Worlds of Words Center. Our joint research focused on exploring how bilingual picturebooks can be used to develop language awareness with children and preservice teachers.
I welcome inquiries from Masters and PhD students wishing to complete research concerning children's literature with a focus on picturebooks and national identity, diversity or dual language picturebooks.
My research focus is on picturebooks featuring more than one language. My work has examined New Zealand English picturebooks featuring borrowed Māori loanwords, and bilingual picturebooks featuring languages from around the world.
