Professor Martin Thrupp

Martin Thrupp's research interests are in education policy, with a particular focus on school reform as it plays out in different national and local settings. He has previously undertaken research in England and across several other European countries as well as in New Zealand and is currently working on a comparative study of the privatisation of schooling in Finland, Sweden and New Zealand. Thrupp has edited collections about New Zealand education policy published in 1999, 2010 and 2017, and is currently co-editing a large collection about Finnish education policy and sociology of education with Piia Seppänen, Jaakko Kauko and Sonja Kosunen (to be published by Springer in 2022). He has also written a number of other books including one about New Zealand's National Standards policy, 'The Search for Better Educational Standards: A Cautionary Tale' (Springer 2018). With Mary Hill, he co-edited the latest edition of New Zealand’s main teacher education text: The Professional Practice of Teaching in New Zealand (Cengage 2019). Thrupp has won awards for his contribution to educational research including the NZARE McKenzie Award. He writes a regular column in the New Zealand Principal.
