Mr Aref Shams
Aref is a PhD student in international law at University College London. His PhD thesis explores the phenomenon of international cooperation in international law. His broader research interests include public international law, the theory of international law, and international environmental law. He also has an interest in the ways in which international law affects the relationship between global North and South (particularly Muslim) countries. This aspect of his research explores the encounters with and uses of international law by global South international lawyers. Before his PhD studies, Aref collaborated in different capacities with the United Nations International Law Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea among other organisations. Aref holds a Master in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, and a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the University of Waikato.
