The University of Waikato cello octet, Cellophonics, was created as a performance outlet for the excellent cello students enrolled at the University of Waikato, studying with James Tennant. For some years Tennant has been the instigator for numerous cello groupings including the Auckland Cello Ensemble and the Belli Celli, featuring players from the Auckland Philharmonia. These ensembles have collaborated with many national and international artists including soprano Patricia Wright and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.
Cellophonics has been in existence for the past nine years and is the only permanent ensemble of its kind in the country. This outstanding group of young musicians have, over the years, performed in most of the musical centres of New Zealand. Among its illustrious alumni can be counted many students who have won national and international competitions, including Santiago Cañón Valencia and Edward King.
