Staff and students at Waikato have a history of bridging musical worlds by bringing traditional Māori instruments, ngā taonga pūoro, into their works.
In 2014 Emeritus Professor Ian Graham and Agi Lehár-Graham generously gifted a large donation to the Conservatorium of Music. In an initiative led by Professor of Music Martin Lodge, some of this funding was utilised to commission the eminent taonga pūoro maker Brian Flintoff to create an exceptional collection of some fifty instruments. The collection Te Kohinga Taonga Pūoro was formally welcomed to the University in 2016 and is maintained on permanent display in the Conservatorium of Music. Instruments from the collection are in frequent use for creative projects, research, teaching and ceremonial occasions.
