About Dean

Dean’s academic background includes teaching media studies at the University of Waikato and Wintec, and several years as a senior tutor in the Centre of Tertiary Teaching and Learning (CeTTL). His teaching includes a particular focus on papers dealing with critical perspectives on media, society and culture.

His PhD research focused on how conspiracy theorists have used conceptions of the internet as an ‘alternative medium’ in order to propagate their ideas. Alongside conspiracy culture, his other areas of research interest include occulture (engagements between occultism and popular culture); popular music; and comics. He is also concerned with the relationships between media, culture, and the current era of environmental crisis.

Before academia, Dean worked in radio broadcasting for several years. He is an active creative practitioner in music, comics, and poetry.
