Community Day Activities 4-6
4. Kīngitanga Trail Bus Tour
In 1858, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero was raised as King to unite iwi (Māori tribes) and preserve their rangatiratanga (chiefly autonomy), cultural and economic integrity in the face of increasing settler challenges. This movement is the Kīngitanga or King Movement.
The Kīngitanga Trail is a bus tour to two significant Kīngitanga sites. The first site is Taupiri Maunga (mountain); a significant tribal landmark and burial site of the Waikato-Tainui people. The second is Rangiriri; a partly-restored battle site where the invading Government forces and Māori fought in November 1863. We will also be welcomed and have a tour at the Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development. Established in 2000 the College is a tribal academic and research institute built to develop a national and international community of leading indigenous scholars. Research includes cultural, environmental, health and well-being and leadership of the Waikato-Tainui people.
