13. Movement for Joy

Join in for a dynamic part movement class and part creative conversation led by Atamira Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Jack Gray. Created for diverse communities to activate the physical body using perspectives that integrate health, wellbeing and joy, inclusive to all levels of mobility.

Movement for Joy gleefully decolonises western dance practice and also acknowledges the sedentary nature of modern life and impacts on Indigenous Stamina. Dance as a unifying expression of community, moves people quickly past mental blockages triggered by subtle fear and trauma patterns. Through patience, light heartedness and good music, we co-create flow on effects of a healthier society as a reminder that interpersonal space is always alongside us.

The class requires you to be barefoot, in light, comfortable clothing for maximum mobility, a sweat towel and water.

Jack Gray (Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahungunu) is a founding member of Atamira Dance Company, the leading Māori dance theatre company in Aotearoa. With experience sharing the love with people all over the world, particularly Turtle Island and Hawai’i, Jack has specialised in the development of research practices that activate and embody Māori cultural methodologies, contemporary dance techniques and inter-cultural/inter-disciplinary community activations.
