Te Reo Māori

Greetings to you all in your pursuit of excellence in ensuring the survival, retention and maintenance of our noble language and its accompanying traditions.

The challenge for us all is to develop international links while nurturing that which makes us unique. The maintenance, retention and survival of the Māori language is dependent on each and every one of us. The erosion of the language in the past has been succeeded by a revitalisation within contemporary society.  Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao takes pride in our role in that revitalisation.

Within Te Aka Reo, you will have the opportunity to learn the language from beginners level through to advanced.  Papers cover poetry, public speaking, the written word, formal and informal language and the use of techniques like metaphor and idiomatic expressions.  Our expert teaching staff provide you with a safe and encouraging learning environment to stimulate, support and challenge you in your journey.

Careers

The ability to converse in both Māori and English has become increasingly important within a number of professional areas. The recognition of Māori as an official language of Aotearoa has been accompanied by an acknowledgement of tangata whenua issues within the community and society as a whole.

Some of these areas are:

• Education (teaching and the development of learning resources);
• Medicine (practice and therapy);
• Research (tribal, national and museum);
• Media (television, radio, publications and new developments);
• Government (politics, research and translation);
• Travel and Tourism;
• And many others.

A Major in Te Reo Māori

To complete Te Reo Māori as a single major for the BA, students must gain 135 points from papers listed under Te Reo Maori.  This includes 105 points above 100 level and 60 points above 200 level.  Students must complete papers MAORI111, MAORI112, MAORI210, MAORI211, MAORI212, MAORI310, MAORI311, MAORI312 and MAORI316.

To complete Te Reo Māori as part of a double major for the BA or other undergraduate degree, students must gain 120 points from papers listed under Te Reo Māori.  This must include 90 points above 100 level and 45 points above 200 level.  Students must complete papers MAORI111, MAORI112, MAORI210, MAORI211, MAORI212, MAORI310, MAORI311,and MAORI312.

Minor in Te Reo Māori

To complete a minor in Te Reo Māori, students must complete 60 points from the papers listed for the Te Reo Māori major, with at least 30 points above 100 level and including papers MAORI111, MAORI112, MAORI211 and MAORI212.

Te Tohu Paetahi

Te Tohu Paetahi, our total immersions Māori language programme has paved the way for the revitalisation of our ancestral language, and 2016 saw Te Tohu Paetahi celebrate its 25th birthday.  From 2019 Te Tohu Paetahi is available in both Hamilton and Tauranga.

The focus of the programme is to provide students with a unique Māori language immersion pathway in which papers in te reo Māori are concentrated into a one year Diploma.  The goal is to produce students who can fluently and proficiently speak te reo Māoril.
