Sir David is an Honorary Professor of the University of Waikato. Educated at the universities of Auckland and Oxford he practised at the New Zealand bar, representing Tainui and other Maori interests in major Treaty litigation. Appointed to the High Court he was President of the New Zealand Law Commission and Chairman of the Rules Committee. He served as presiding judge of the Court of Appeal of Samoa and as a New Zealand member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. He served as a permanent member of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand and was appointed as a member of the Appeals Chamber of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon of which in 2011 he was elected President. He has had visiting appointments at universities in the United States, England, Hong Kong and The Netherlands. He is an Overseas Bencher of the Inner Temple.
