Kīngitanga Day Design
'Kotahi āno te kōhao o te ngira e kuhu ai
te miro mā, te miro pango, te miro whero'
- Pōtatau Te Wherowhero
The design and proverb encapsulates the spirit of unity symbolised by the Kīngitanga. The raising of Pōtatau Te Wherowhero as the first Māori King represented this joining together and through his house the legacy endures.
The feather represents the current monarch and the chiefly lineage from which he descends.
The stylised mountains and ridges acknowledge the prestige of the many iwi who support and uphold the Kīngitanga.
Kīngitanga Day is a celebration of growth and wisdom drawing together not only Māori, but all people of Aotearoa.
