Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa Māori Business Programme

The purpose of Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa is to improve Māori business capability, awareness, and engagement in Southeast Asia. Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa has been redesigned in 2020 to offer an online platform that aims to increase Māori business engagement, capability and awareness internationally, in light of international travel restrictions. You will still experience an opportunity that incorporates educational, business and leaderships knowledge and expertise, within a unique international context, alongside like-minded peers under the shared values of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and aroha.

The key focus area for this Programme is on Indigenous and Cultural Tourism

Programme Structure

The Programme is organised into two specific parts and participants are required to attend all components:

  1. Orientation
  2. Malaysia Programme
  3. Group Business Project

Malaysia Programme

The Programme will begin by bringing participants together to connect and set everyone up for the 1 week of engagement.

Participants will be able to meet each other while undertaking an orientation that will allow you to prepare for connecting meaningfully with the Malaysia Programme. The orientation will aim to cover the following aspects that will be built on during the Programme:

  • Background on Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region
  • Historic and current political and cultural realities in Malaysia
  • Aotearoa business engagement with Malaysia
  • Malaysia and Indigenous business trends and the growing market opportunities for Māori

During the engagement week, participants will have the opportunity to connect with industry experts across Malaysia and Aotearoa and gain insights and understanding of doing business in Southeast Asia through a series of complementary weekly online workshops. You will complete the Programme having increased your awareness of the Malaysian market, with the connections and relationships built to increase your capability and capacity to engage in Southeast Asia going forward.

Time commitment: The Programme requires compulsory attendance for the Orientation and final Symposium days, as well over a 7 week period where participants will come together to engage nationally and internationally through online platforms.

Group Business Project

On the final day of the Programme, the group will come together and you will present your Group Business Project findings to a panel at the Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa Symposium. There will also be a range of speakers, workshops and THK alumni networking that will take place during the Symposium.

There are a number of awesome prizes that are up for grabs!

Participants are required to commit to attending all parts of the Programme.
