Bachelor of Science graduate Sebastian Ross has been awarded the prestigious Dr Andrew Smith Medal for Academic Excellence, recognising him as one of the University of Waikato’s most exceptional undergraduate scholars.
For Sebastian, who grew up in the Coromandel and has nurtured a lifelong fascination with sharks, the honour reinforces both his academic success and his commitment to marine conservation.
Sebastian and Dr Andrew Smith met with members of their families to celebrate his success while studying at the University of Waikato and passion towards marine conservation.
He chose the University of Waikato for its strong sense of community and the opportunity to build genuine relationships with lecturers and researchers.
This supportive environment helped him develop a clear research pathway in shark ecology. A highlight was a semester long project where he analysed bronze whaler tagging data in collaboration with leading New Zealand marine scientists.
Later this year he will begin a PhD at Florida International University, focusing on the genetics of the shark fin trade in Hong Kong.
The Dr Andrew Smith Medal for Academic Excellence was established in 2022 by distinguished alumnus, CEO of Prolife Foods and Rhodes Scholar Dr Andrew Smith, whose philanthropy champions academic excellence across all disciplines.
“Supporting high-achieving students through these initiatives helps show them their value and encourages them to continue to achieve, especially in those later years of university where you start to get exposure to complex ideas and that critical thinking that is so essential in the workplace,” Dr Smith says.
Sebastian notes that receiving the Medal has already had a meaningful impact.
Receiving this award is not only an honour, but its prestige has opened international pathways for me. It reinforces the dedication I put into my studies and has given me even greater motivation as I continue my journey toward becoming a shark biologist.
The award reflects the transformative power of donor support.
Through Dr Smith’s generosity for Sebastian and previous awardees, outstanding students are encouraged to realise their potential and take the next step toward becoming future leaders in their fields.
