|
 | Teams Meetings | Panopto |
| Primary Purpose | Live, interactive meetings and classes | Lecture capture and video distribution |
| Live Interaction | Full interaction (chat, video, audio, screen share) | Limited (via Webcast chat, not real-time discussion) |
| Breakout Rooms | Supported | Not available |
| Screen Sharing | Supported (presenters and participants) | Presenter only (during screen capture) |
| Chat Functionality | Persistent chat | Optional moderated chat (webcasts only) and asynchronous discussion in any recording |
| Recording | Limited interaction when stored in the Panopto video library; small presenter’s video with attendees’ video below. | Superior interaction; large presenter’s video (swappable with secondary presentation area); time indexing |
| Storage | Stored by default for 120 days in Stream, but can be mapped to the Panopto video library* | Stored in the Panopto video library with class folder structure and automatic permissions |
| Editing Tools | Basic trimming, embedded callouts and forms when stored in Stream* | Advanced (edit timeline, insert quizzes and clips, captions) |
| Captioning | Live transcription & closed captions | Auto-captioning with editing and searchability |
| Analytics | Limited (meeting attendance reports) * | Detailed viewer analytics (who watched what, when, how long) |
| Moodle Integration | Limited to adding URLs (links to meetings) | Excellent (Panopto block, video and assignment activities) |
| Accessibility | Live captions, keyboard navigation, transcripts | WCAG-compliant video player, captions, transcripts |
| Best Use Case | Synchronous, discussion-based classes or tutorials | Synchronous lecture delivery and asynchronous flipped learning |
*These limitations can be overcome to some extent when Teams Meetings recordings are stored in the Panopto video library.
We have added a Panopto Video activity and a Panopto Assignment activity to Moodle.
A Panopto button is also available in the Moodle text editor, allowing you to add Panopto content to most Moodle sections.
