About this opportunity
This PhD project will investigate the behaviour and design of timber portal frame systems for industrial applications in New Zealand, with particular emphasis on the performance of knee connections. The research is developed in collaboration with Red Stag TimberLab, providing a strong industry context and focus on practical implementation. The study will examine the use of engineered wood products, such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, in combination with steel components where appropriate, to develop efficient, buildable, and industry-relevant structural solutions.
Key aspects of the study include the characterisation of connection behaviour, encompassing load transfer mechanisms, stiffness, strength, and failure modes within portal frame systems. The project will adopt a combination of analytical, numerical (finite element), and experimental approaches to develop validated models and design-oriented methodologies. Experimental investigations will be supported by industry-supplied materials and components, ensuring relevance to current manufacturing and construction practice.
The outcomes are expected to deliver practical design guidance, validated connection solutions, and performance benchmarks aligned with New Zealand engineering practice, supporting the wider adoption of timber portal frames in industrial construction.

Eligibility
A strong academic background in civil or structural engineering (or a closely related field) is required. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of structural analysis and design, particularly in timber and/or steel structures. Experience or interest in finite element modelling or numerical analysis is desirable, as is an interest in experimental structural testing. Candidates should be able to undertake independent research, communicate effectively, and engage with industry partners.
