From Ocean Governance to Ocean Equity: Enhancing Protection of the Marine Environment and the Communities that Depend on it
Abstract
Environmental justice recognises that well-intentioned environmental protection efforts have caused disproportionate impacts on marginalised communities. Climate justice similarly recognises that marginalised communities experience climate change impacts “first and worst.” Leveraging principles of climate justice and rights of nature, this presentation applies anti-subordination principles to enhance protection of Indigenous and coastal fishing communities and improve marine stewardship through ocean equity protections.
