Our name ‘Te Kotahi’ draws inspiration from Sir Robert Te Kotahi Mahuta, the founding Director of the Centre of Māori Studies Research, and reflects a unity of purpose, drawing together concepts of oneness and togetherness.

Centre for Māori Studies and Research founded under Director Robert Te Kotahi Mahuta.
1990
Te Roopu Manukura established.
1996
School of Māori and Pacific Development established.
2010
Te Kotahi Research Institute established.
Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith appointed as Inaugural Director. Focus on Maori-led research supporting Iwi development.
2015
Associate Professor Leonie Pihama appointed as Director. Focus on Kaupapa Maori research supporting Iwi development.
2016
Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies established, replacing School of Māori and Pacific Development.
2018
Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies and Te Kotahi Research Institute structured into the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori Office.
2020
Associate Professor Maui Hudson appointed as Director. Focus on interdisciplinary Māori-led research supporting Iwi development.
