Health Promotion

Accessing support and healthcare remains difficult for Māori, Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ students and Pasifka students. Our Health Promotions Coordinator, Dr Tāwhanga Nopera (Te Arawa,  Tūwharetoa,Tainui, Ngāpuhi), has expertise Māori, Indigenous, Tākatāpui and LGBTQIA+ health.

Through direct engagement with student support groups on campus, and staff networks, Tāwhanga advises on kaupapa Māori strategies toward oranga and wellness. Tāwhanga provides one on one or group support and wānanga for students who may be feeling isolated and unsure about ways forward, and also for staff who have concerns about students they are supporting. Tāwhanga can be contacted by emailing [email protected] or by calling the Student Health reception.

The following are links to research undertaken by Dr Tāwhanga Nopera. They provide the most up to date data on wellness and access barriers to healthcare for Tākatāpui and LGBTQIA+ living in Aotearoa.
