The University of Waikato Basketball Club

Newly formed in 2016, The University of Waikato Basketball club was established to enhance the basketball opportunities for students at the University of Waikato. Now open to both students and community members, the club is quickly growing in numbers.

Catering for both competitive and social players, the club entered seven teams into the Waikato Basketball Men’s and Mixed Leagues in 2017, 2018 and 2019. 2020 and 2021 have been very different years. We have mens and women's programmes.

We hold trials at the beginning of the academic year and we form as many teams as possible. You do not need to be a student at Waikato to join a team but because of the league rules you must be aged 15 years or older. Our women’s team/s are then entered into a Waikato women’s social league which holds its games on a Thursday night at St Johns College, Hillcrest. Training times differ each year but there are generally 2-3 trainings per week that we try to arrange around the players schedules (generally night trainings or on a Saturday morning). Fees also fluctuate each year.

All teams have their weekly training sessions at the Faculty of Education (FOE) Gym or UniRec Sports Hall.
