The paper explores interactions of plants with their environment. Topics will include acquisition of carbon and water by terrestrial plants, carbon acquisition by aquatic plans, limitations to plant productivity in natural and managed environments, plant responses to environmental gradients, and the forces shaping the structure and composition of natural vegetation. Applications to crop production and to interpretation of New Zealand native vegetation will be shown.
