This paper uses a framework of relevant contemporary topics, including Te Ao Māori to enhance students' language competence. We will begin by analysing the main ideas in academic texts. We will then work on developing written and oral communication skills in preparation for undergraduate study. Throughout the paper, students will broaden their academic vocabulary, and confidence in communicating in academic contexts. Teaching methods and strategies will include te Kaupapa Māori approaches.
