This paper introduces students to the marae and the welcoming (powhiri) process. Students will learn basic marae etiquette and the process of being welcomed onto a marae.

This paper looks to support people who wish to understand more about the meaning, purpose and function of a marae and, in particular, comprehension of the welcoming process that occurs on marae.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of marae etiquette, kawa and tikanga.

2. Show an understanding of the function of the marae.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the powhiri process, including karanga, whaikorero, waiata, hongi and kai.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate terminology associated with Marae and Powhiri concepts.

5. Participate in a marae welcome.
