Empowered to make a difference, Mohseen Khan, University of Waikato alumnus and New Zealand Manaaki Scholarship recipient, shares his experience of studying abroad.
Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship

Mohseen Khan has aspirations to modernise and streamline business processes in Fiji so more SMEs can take advantage of the unlimited opportunities available and future projects can contribute positively to the island nation’s community.
He’s well equipped to do so, with a Master of Management Studies (since renamed a Master of Business) in Agribusiness from the University of Waikato, a qualification he attained while on a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship.
As Fiji’s National Project Coordinator for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, Mohseen manages the implementation of the 'Sustainable transformation of domestic agri-food systems' STODAS project, enhancing domestic crops and livestock production.
The 10 million Euro project, generously funded by the European Union, is aimed at strengthening policy and institutional environments in support of national agrifood systems transformation agenda; strengthening sustainable and community-based production systems; and strengthening capacities for sustainable agrifood systems.
Enriching and outstanding support
It’s a project Mohseen feels confident in delivering, in part due to what he learnt while at Waikato.
“The academic experience at Waikato was enriching, with outstanding support from faculty and opportunities for hands-on learning that broadened my expertise in business management, research and agribusiness,” says the University of Waikato alum.
The Master of Management provided me with not only advanced academic knowledge but also the practical skills needed to excel in today’s dynamic business environment. It was a transformative experience both professionally and personally, learning to adapt to new environments and embrace diverse perspectives.
Receiving the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship profoundly impacted Mohseen’s educational journey.
“The scholarship eased my transition into a new cultural and academic setting, enabling me to fully immerse myself in the learning process,” he says. “It fostered a deep sense of responsibility to give back, further motivating me to apply my skills to make a positive impact in my home country. The support provided through this scholarship also enriched my understanding of New Zealand’s values, particularly its commitment to equity, sustainability, and community-centered leadership.”
Globally applicable learnings
Of his time at the University, Mohseen says the institution stands out for its commitment to fostering a global, inclusive, learning atmosphere.
“The faculty’s expertise and dedication were instrumental in shaping my critical thinking, strategic management, and leadership abilities. Through case studies, real-world projects, and a curriculum tailored to current industry needs, I gained hands-on insights into management practices that are globally applicable yet tailored to regional nuances. The University’s strong network of industry partners also opened doors to invaluable networking and learning experiences.”
Now in a role that enables him to put his learnings into practice, while strengthening business opportunities for his homeland, Mohseen is grateful to the Manaaki scholarship programme and the University of Waikato for empowering him to achieve his goals and make a positive difference in his community back in Fiji.
